What changes to continuing education requirements went into effect on February 6, 2020?
Starting with the 2020 license renewal cycle, the Florida Board of Cosmetology has decreased continuing education requirements from 16 hours to a minimum of 10 hours. You can still satisfy your continuing education requirements for your license renewal with our 16-hour online Cosmetology Continuing Education course.
Did Florida cosmetology license requirements change for hair braiding, hair wrapping and body wrapping?
Yes. As of July 1, 2020, licenses are no longer required to perform hair braiding, hair wrapping or body wrapping. If you work in any of these professions, Florida does not require you to submit an application for licensure or complete continuing education.
Can I take the cosmetology license renewal test without purchasing the continuing education course?
Yes. If you do not need to take the Cosmetology Continuing Education course, you can register for the online license renewal test on its own. The online version of the test is available in English and Vietnamese.
How long does the continuing education course take to complete?
The continuing education course for license renewal includes 16 hours of training on a variety of state-required topics, including HIV/AIDS, sanitation and sterilization, state and federal laws, OSHA regulations and more. The course is not timed, so you can progress through the training at your own pace.
What is a renewal cycle?
A renewal cycle is mandated by the state as a date which all cosmetology licensure must be renewed. The date falls on October 31st every 2 years. If this is your first renewal, you must have your continuing education completed by the end of the next renewal cycle (even if the date falls before 2 years from your initial licensing, at the discretion of the state.) Your renewal period will not be more than 2 years from your licensure date. If you miss your renewal period, your license will become inactive. After your first renewal period, your license will renew every 2 years from that renewal date.
What if I don't take my continuing education by my renewal date?
Your license will become inactive until you complete your continuing ed requirements and pay your fees to the state. If it has been 2 years since your license has become delinquent, it will be null and void and you will not be able to renew.
How do I know what course I need to complete?
Cosmetologists, Facial specialists, Full Specialists and Nail Technicians must complete the continuing education course prior to the expiration of their license.

How many hours of training does Florida require for continuing education?
The state of Florida requires cosmetologists to complete a continuing education course that includes at least:
- One hour of training on HIV/AIDS & other communicable diseases.
- Three hours of training on sanitation and sterilization.
- 30 minutes of training on Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
- 30 minutes of training on issues of workers' compensation related to Florida law.
- Two hours of training on state and federal laws and rules related to cosmetologists, cosmetology, salons, specialists, specialty salons, and booth renters; specifically including but not limited to Chapter 477, F.S., and the Rules of the Board.
- One hour of training on chemical makeup related to hair, skin and nails.
- One hour of training on environmental issues.
- One hour of Continuing Education training that provides additional instruction in any of the courses approved by the State of Florida for the purpose of Continuing Education.
What are the license renewal fees?
Every two years, cosmetologists, nail specialists, facial specialists and barbers are required to pay a license renewal fee and complete continuing education training. An overview of the renewal fees is listed below.
Note: The Florida Board of Cosmetology has waived all renewal fees for licenses that expire October 31, 2020. While no state fee is needed to renew your license in 2020, you are still required to meet your continuing education requirements.

What if I have not completed my continuing education?
All licensees are required to complete the continuing education courses prior to the expiration of their license. You will not be permitted to work unless your license is currently active. If you have not paid the renewal fees and completed your continuing ed prior to your expiration date, your license will become inactive.
As of July 1, 2020, licensure requirements were removed for individuals who perform hair braiding, hair wrapping and body wrapping.

Yes, if you are applying for a Florida Cosmetology License or a Florida Facial or Nail Specialty Registration, we offer the 4-hour initial HIV/AIDS training online to fulfill your credit requirement for cosmetology licensure.
Do I need the HIV/AIDS refresher course?
Licensed barbers, barber's assistants and restricted barbers need to complete the 2-hour HIV/AIDS continuing education course for Barbers.
How do your courses work?
Our courses have no timers, and our quizzes allow you unlimited attempts to pass. This makes it easier for you to stop and start your course, pass your quizzes and go back and review if you need to double check a question.
Is your course open book?
The course is online but can still be called 'open book' because you are allowed to review the material at any point and can complete quizzes any amount needed to pass.
What happens after I've completed my continuing ed requirement?
We will electronically submit proof of your course completion information to the state. You will also have the option of downloading your certificate after you pass. Once the department gets your completion information, you should receive your license within 30 days.
My license is currently inactive/delinquent. What do I do?
You must complete your required continuing education course and submit your renewal fees for the current renewal cycle.
I received a shortfall letter saying I have not completed my continuing education. What now?
